Presentation Abstract:
AlphaMicron was formed in 1997 to fulfill an SBIR opportunity with the U.S. Air Force. Since that time they have developed a range of technology that incorporates nanoparticles in liquid crystals to produce materials in which the translucency is electrically controlled. Current products on the market include ski goggles and motorcycle helmet visors that can dim at the touch of a button. They continue to develop optics technology for the Department of Defense and they recently received an Ohio Third Frontier grant in support of their development of smart mirrors for the automotive market.
At the May 18th meeting of the Nano-Network Bahman Taheri, CEO of AlphaMicron, will describe the technology portfolio of AlphaMicron and the roadmap of development that is producing rapid growth for this Northeast Ohio company.
The meeting is being graciously hosted by GrafTech International at their world headquarters in Parma, OH. Because of GrafTech’s hospitality, there is no charge to attend but please pre-register so that we have an accurate estimate of attendance.

Presentation Abstract:
Many nanoscale materials and structures exhibit a unique combination of properties that can be exploited in multiple end products ranging from multifunctional fabric and miniaturized energy conversion devices to environmental/biological sensing and mitigation. These products and other products like them are very relevant to the future development of this region because of the state’s strength in materials development and production and the clusters of companies involved in these end-markets in Ohio.
The aim of this one-day networking event is to bring together leaders and sponsors from Ohio industry, AFRL, and university faculty to discuss possible growth options and collaborative opportunities. Panelists from a range of companies and from AFRL will present their perspectives on the future of this vibrant field, and on the strategic paths charted by their organizations.
There is a poster session on Multifunctional Nanomaterials. Space is limited and available on first come, first serve basis. To register your poster, send title and abstract to CENSMM.
This meeting is a joint effort of the Nano-Network and Wright State University's Center for Nanoscale Multifunctional Materials (CENSMM). Thanks to our generous sponsors there is no charge for attending this event but please pre-register so that we have an accurate count for lunch.

March 10, 2010: Carbon NanotubeThermoplastic Composites ... a Strategic Growth Opportunity for Plastic Processors presented by Joe Golba, Manager of Process Development, for PolyOne Corporation. In the coming years nanotechnology will revolutionize products with which we are familiar today and will enable the development of new products and materials. The ability to tailor materials and their properties and functions by engineering these materials at the nanoscale will impact products and the way that we live on a broad scale. PolyOne is one of the companies that is developing and offering a range of thermoplastic compounds that incorporate nanomaterials. This presentation will describe the development of thermoplastic composites that incorporate carbon nanotubes, one of the promising materials for higher strength and increased functionality. PolyOne will describe the development process, the features and benefits of these new nanocomposites and the expectations for future nanocomposite materials development.
Presentation Abstract:
Increased pressures by institutional administrators to create value from their IP combined with pressures on companies to develop and commercialize new technology and products rapidly are pushing for a change in the process of technology transfer. In 2000, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with its founding partners created a new model for accelerating the commercialization of technology through the establishment of The Nanotechnology Institute™ (NTI). The NTI contains a revolutionary structure in which 12 academic research institutions entered into a common framework in Intellectual Property management and Sponsored Research Agreements. The NTI also funds translational research and provides matching funds for sponsored research. The results are now bearing fruit: an increase in intellectual property creation, and increased rate of technology licensing, and an increase in the number of spin-out companies. A second novel component of the NTI is the Nanotechnology Commercialization Group (NCG), consisting of three technology transfer experts combing and collating nanotechnology-based IP from among the NTI member institutions.
March 20, 2007: "Can Small Things Bring Big Bucks to Northeast Ohio?" An interactive panel discussion with prominent members of our community to discuss your ideas regarding how to stimulate nanotechnology centric innovation in Northeast Ohio. Your participation will help focus the Nano-Network's future efforts and activities to ensure that we are a hub for research and commercialization of nanotechnology. Panelists included: Luis Proenza, President, University of Akron; Norman Tien, Dean, Case School of Engineering, Case Western Reserve University; Scott Rickert, President & CEO, Nanofilm. This event was sponsored by the University of Akron.
February 6, 2007: "The Venture Capital Perspective: Investing in Micro/Nanotechnologies" presented by Daniel Wolfe, Vice President of Harris and Harris Group, Inc. Harris & Harris Group is a publicly held venture-capital company listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker TINY. Since 2001, the firm has made all of its initial investments in companies that are commercializing products enabled by tiny technology, that is, nanotechnology, MEMS and microsystems. Harris & Harris currently has 26 tiny technology companies in their portfolio. The market focus of each of these companies varies widely and includes semiconductors, healthcare, photonics, instrumentation and tools and energy. The stage at which the frim invests in companies also varies signicantly; that is, they will invest at very early, seed-stage rounds of funding as well as late, expansion-type rounds of funding. Mr. Wolfe's presentation will discuss the emergence of nanotechnology as an investment opportunity as well as the types of attributes the management team of Harris & Harris Group looks for when using companies in its current portfolio as case studies. This event was sponsord by Powdermet.
